Pomellato Mother of Pearl
Mother-of-pearl is a material produced by bivalve molluscs, whose shell consisting of two hinged parts (valves) gives them their name. It is the material that covers pearls used in jewellery and makes them so prized for ornamental purposes. Mother-of-pearl is composed of numerous thin layers of aragonite, a crystallised form of calcium carbonate, a chemical compound of calcium, carbon and oxygen. These layers are bound together by another substance called conchiolin. When observed under a microscope, mother-of-pearl effectively looks like a wall, where the aragonite layers are the bricks and the conchiolin is the cement. This laminate structure gives mother-of-pearl its distinctive lustre and iridescence, technically known as "orient", where light is reflected and refracted by the different layers: the more even and regular their arrangement, the greater the lustre and orient.
